If you’re a Garmin owner, you’ve probably noticed how tempting those new releases look. Sleeker design, better battery life, upgraded training metrics, it’s easy to convince yourself that this year’s model will finally be the one.

But before you part with your cash, it’s worth asking: is the upgrade really necessary? Or could your current Garmin just need a small refresh to feel brand new again?

Let’s take a closer look at what’s actually different between Garmin generations and why sometimes the smartest upgrade is the one that doesn’t cost £800.

1. What’s Actually Different in the Latest Garmin Models?

Garmin releases new models regularly, from the popular Fenix series to Forerunner, Instinct, and Venu. But not every release is a massive leap forward.

For example:

  • Fenix 6 vs Fenix 7: Better solar charging, touchscreen support, and improved GPS accuracy, but overall performance for most users is still very similar.

  • Forerunner 955 vs Forerunner 965: A brighter AMOLED display and improved navigation features, but core training metrics are nearly identical.

If your current Garmin is performing well and giving you accurate data, the upgrade might be more cosmetic than functional.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I regularly use navigation or mapping features?

  • Will I actually benefit from the solar or AMOLED upgrades?

  • Am I chasing performance or just a “new” feeling?

Sometimes that “itch” to upgrade is really just the desire for something fresh. Luckily, there’s a smarter (and much cheaper) way to get that feeling.

2. Battery Life and Performance — The Real Test

Garmin’s battery life is one of its biggest selling points. Even a few generations old, models like the Fenix 6 or Forerunner 945 still last 10+ days with GPS and fitness tracking.

If you’re upgrading purely for longer battery life, check your current performance first. A full reset, updated firmware, and clearing unused activity profiles can bring your battery life back to near-new levels.

The truth is: unless you’re doing ultra-endurance events or constant back-to-back workouts, most older Garmin Watches still outperform many “new” smartwatches  especially compared to Apple Watch or Fitbit.

3. Software and Feature Updates - You Might Already Have Them

Garmin is great at supporting older models through software updates. Many new features like “Training Readiness,” “Morning Report,” and “HRV Status” have been rolled out to existing watches through firmware updates.

So before you buy new, check Garmin Connect or the official site for your model’s software updates. You might already have access to the latest training tools without spending a penny.

4. A Refresh Can Make Your Garmin Feel Brand New

Here’s the part most people overlook - the aesthetic refresh.

A new Garmin strap can completely transform your watch. Swap your old silicone band for something that matches your lifestyle or mood, rugged nylon for workouts, stainless steel for smartwear, or a leather strap for weekends.

It’s like buying a new watch… for a fraction of the price.

5. When Upgrading Makes Sense

There are moments when upgrading is genuinely worth it:

  • You’re upgrading from a Forerunner to a Fenix for multi-sport use.

  • You need solar power for expeditions or ultra runs.

  • Your battery health has significantly degraded over time.

  • You want new map features or the latest AMOLED display.

If those features directly improve your training or experience - go for it. But if you’re mostly driven by the look or feel of something new, a simple refresh might be all you need.

The Smart Move

Garmin watches are built to last - that’s why they’re trusted by athletes, adventurers, and professionals.

Before you spend big on a new model, try refreshing your current one. A new strap, a cleaned bezel, and the latest software update can make your watch feel new again — and save you hundreds in the process.

Your watch isn’t outdated. It might just need a new look.
